Patty’s player – Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi announced Wednesday that Nick Petty will start at quarterback for Pitt in the Peach Bowl. The team will be without key starter Kenny Pickett, who has decided not to bowl to prepare for the 2022 NFL Draft.

“Right now, Nick is the guy,” Narduzzi said at a press conference Wednesday. “And he deserves to be that guy.

Petty played intermittently for Pitt during his college career, making just one start in 2019 against Delaware and occasionally filling in for Pickett. In all, he has played in 16 games for the Panthers over the past three years since becoming a freshman, and in those 16 appearances, Petty has thrown for 458 yards and three touchdowns and been limited to one interception.

As a result, Petty played well in one career start, throwing for 271 yards and two scores against the Blue Hens. He also threw the only pick of his career in that game, but was mostly a touchdown as he completed 62.2 percent of his 37 pass attempts in a 17-14 win against the FCS program.

In the Peach Bowl, Petty will face the nation’s worst secondary, as Michigan State allowed 337.7 passing yards per game to opponents in 2021. Petty will also have Biletnikoff Award winner Jordan Addison and All-American Gavin Bartholomew. Israel Abanikanda, Rodney Hammond and Vincent Davis will help him in the reserves. Pittsburgh’s redshirt junior quarterback is expected to start Thursday against Michigan State in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta after Kenny Pickett sat out the game to prepare for the NFL draft.

“I haven’t had a lot of reps,” Petty said Monday, “but I’m still a little seasoned and excited to get out there and play again.”

Pickett led an offense that ranked third in the nation in scoring (43.0) and fifth in total offense (502.9) this season while finishing third in Heisman Trophy voting. He completed 67.2 percent of his passes for 4,319 yards, 42 touchdowns and seven interceptions and rushed for 241 yards and five scores for the No. 12 Panthers (11-2, 7-1 ACC).

Patty’s playing time was limited in the regular season, and he completed 12 of 14 passes for 140 yards, zero touchdowns and interceptions, and a 9-yard run. He has played in eight games this year, but his last appearance came on Oct. 2 in a win at Georgia Tech.

“He’s gotten some playing time this year, too, and he throws the ball well and has a strong arm,” Michigan State defensive coordinator Scotty Hazelton said. “We’re really excited to play with him and see how it works.” But it was the real deal that I could say, okay, who is this guy?

Even Petty sees a potential advantage against the No. 1 Spartans. 10 (10-2, 7-2 Big Ten) due to lack of film to study.

“It might,” said Patty. “I think just the reps I’m getting in practice and being able to watch Ken is a good advantage as well. So I think there’s an element of surprise there, but I’m ready to go with whatever they throw at us.”

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Patty is coming off his second career start, completing 23 of 37 passes for 271 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in a 2019 win against Delaware. He said it felt like “forever” and it’s gotten better since then.

“I definitely had the opportunity to learn a lot from Kenny, I learned a lot in practice,” Patty said. “I would say that he is definitely a completely different player.

The quarterback change isn’t the only big change Pittsburgh’s offense is making heading into the season finale. Offensive coordinator Mark Whipple left for the same job at Nebraska earlier this month, and tight ends coach Tim Salem will lead Michigan State against Michigan State with faith in his starting quarterback.

“I think number one, Nick is a worker,” Salem said. “Nick comes prepared to training every day. Although he doesn’t rehearse much in front of a crowd or audience, he does practice. He understands reading, he understands insults, he can communicate.

“His work is there all year round. So now is his time to go and show what he can do and shine. And I think the players have seen what he is, who he is, and they’re happy to have him on the ball with them.”

Petty planned for four seasons, but trading Pickett effectively meant an adjustment while also spending time throwing to the team’s top receivers. He said we spent the last week plus developing better chemistry with them.

“It’s been a big plus because going from two to one is definitely a change of pace,” Petty said. “It’s easy to throw them, but if you don’t throw them at all, it’s not so easy to throw them.”

Pickett is out, but the Panthers still have a big weapon for Patty to target in Jordan Addison, who won the Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s top receiver. The sophomore has 93 catches for 1,479 yards and 17 touchdowns and downplayed the quarterback change while praising Patty’s play and leadership.

“He’s doing a pretty good job,” Addison said. “When he talks, everyone shuts up and listens, so he’s the first one in the room, and I think we’ll be fine.”

Pickett broke passing records in Pittsburgh’s program, but he was also a threat to pass. Petty may not have the same skill set, but he’s not expected to be a pocket statue.

“Nick is a crazy football player,” said Salem. “In general, he’s not as fast as Kenny, but he still has a north-south mentality. If he has to put his shoulder down and run, he’s scored goals with the ball before, so it’s not unfamiliar to him.”

Michigan State has been strong against the run this season, but ranks last in the nation in yards allowed per game at 337.7. Safety Javier Henderson said the secondary “has something to prove,” while Petty can make a statement against a defense that has given up a lot of yards through the air.

“There’s definitely a lot of similarities with every defense you see,” Petty said. “You try to watch them and the first thing is, well, who are they, how did we play? They like to throw a lot of things at you, they like to keep you on your toes and throw a lot of different blitzes at you, a lot of different coverages.

“We had a lot of time to prepare for it and I was in the movie theater a lot to see what they were doing. And even if they had time, you stay true to who you are and I’ll be ready and I know everyone will be ready for whatever they throw at us.”
